Like many of you, this cold weather has me feeling a little blah.

I need some warmth and sunshine.

So last week, on a cold, sunless day, I headed to Tahiti Tan on Belknap Street where I planned to get a mid-winter summer fix.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the owner of Tahiti Tan, Kayla Vanden Berge, is my sister-in-law. You probably guessed that by our matching last names.

Anyway, I dialed her up and made an appointment for a spray tan - the perfect solution to my pasty-white doldrums.

Tahiti Tan boasts 13 UVA tanning beds as well as two VersaPro booths that seamlessly spray on that golden glow I was searching for.

After a quick lesson from her friendly staff, I stepped into the machine and a few minutes later was on my way home to make dinner.

The next morning I woke up looking like I had spent a week in Mexico.

I’m not kidding.

My skin was an even, golden bronze without a single streak of orangeyness to be found.

The tan lasted about nine days.

“Spray tans have been growing in popularity during the past few years and they are great,” Kayla said. “Lots of people get them during prom season, the holidays and other special occasions”

The best tans, she said, are developed over time.

“With spring break just around the corner, things are starting to get busy,” she said. “The best tans are developed over time. Don’t rush trying to get a tan the last minute. Some people mistakenly believe they first have to get a sunburn before they tan. That’s false. Sunburns actually work against developing a tan.”

Tahiti Tan was voted Best Tanning Salon last year in the E-T’s Best of Erath competition.

The salon is open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.

They also carry a wide range of tanning lotions.

Mention this story and Tahiti Tan will waive the $10 membership fee from Saturday, Jan. 27, through Saturday, Feb. 3.
