When a fast-moving fire destroyed Huckabay’s community center on New Year’s Day, it didn’t take long for residents to spring into action.
Vowing to build a new center, the community has started a GoFundMe page - Huckabay Community Center Rebuild - to raise money for the project.
The goal is $60,000 and so far $810 has been raised.
According to the GoFundMe page, the building was constructed in 1887 as a First Methodist Church.
One hundred years later, the church donated the building to Huckabay, becoming a community center.
“As far back as I can remember the community center has always been there,” said longtime Huckabay resident Lagenea Dowell. “People used to go there on Friday nights to play Dominoes and I would go with my grandparents every week.”
Dowell said the loss of the building is significant but the community is resolute in its plans to rebuild.
“Huckabay is growing and I think a new community center would be a big asset,” Dowell said. “I’m trying to look on the bright side of things.”
