Erath County Sheriff Matt Coates said investigators are still trying to determine why a man pointed a gun at a female motorist Tuesday, then led authorities on a two-day chase.

Garrett Frey, 41, was arrested at his home Wednesday after authorities received a tip that he was in the area.

“Units from the Erath County Sheriff’s Office responded and set up a perimeter,“ a release from the sheriff’s office states.

After authorities made contact with Frey, he surrendered and was taken into custody.

The arrest came less than 24 hours after the incident began Tuesday when a woman called 911 to report that Frey had pointed a gun at her as she drove by.

Units responded to the scene and made contact with Frey in the front yard of a residence located at 2606 CR 454. Frey then fled on foot and the Stephenville Police Department, DPS helicopter and a regional SWAT team joined the sheriff’s office in the search effort.

The search was halted late Tuesday night with no sign of Frey.

On Wednesday morning, Coates said he hoped for a peaceful resolution.

“We hope he turns himself in,” Coates said.

Residents living in the area were told to lock their doors and stay inside Tuesday night. Numerous reports surfaced on Facebook from residents who said they could hear the DPS helicopter flying overhead.

Coates said investigators are still trying to figure out what prompted Frey’s actions.

“Right now we are trying to let him rest before we talk to him,” Coates said Thursday. “We have no idea what was going on, if drugs were involved or some type of mental illness.”

The E-T received an anonymous call Tuesday morning from an unidentified man who said a house on CR 454 had some “interesting” graffiti spray painted on a barn and Frey’s truck.

“My neighbor’s house has graffiti and it’s interesting,” the caller said.

The E-T obtained photos of the graffiti where the truck reads, “God help Frey fam.”

Frey is reportedly a former bull rider.

He has a criminal history including an arrest for burglary of a habitation with intent to commit assault in 2015, and possession of marijuana in 2017.

Frey is being held at the Erath County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He has been charged with aggravated assault.
