Texas has kicked off tax-free weekend, which was established in 1999 to help parents get more bang for their buck in all the back-to-school shopping they need to do.

The E-T stopped by some local businesses Friday to check out some of the deals.

“We usually have a big crowd. Its a big shopping weekend like a holiday,” said owner of 4 Kids Only GeriAnn Kalsbeek. “We are doing a buy one get one free off our summer clearance and all our shoes are buy one get one free. Under Armour is our big seller. It’s what they want to buy and wear now.”

Items that are tax-free include backpacks, clothing, shoes, school supplies and even some emergency preparedness items that are $100 or less but excludes computers, software, textbooks and jewelry.

Velvet Twelve, located in the Bosque River Shopping Center, is another local clothing retailer with some fashionable attire for back-to-school needs.

“We have a ton of denim jeans and shorts — the jeans are my favorite, I have three pair,” said employee Baylie Deviney. “We also have $15 shoes.”

Two college students, Jadie Hargrove and Kaylee Cook, were shopping around the business looking at new attire to start off the new year.

Silver Wings, located on the Stephenville downtown square, is having some amazing sales for tax-free weekend that includes buy one get one 50 percent off and a 50 percent off rack outside the doors.

“We’ve had a lot of people say they’re coming and have a lot of sales going on today and tomorrow for tax-free weekend,” said employee Holly Heim. “We also have a 10 percent military discount and a 10 percent teacher discount. Some of our best selling items are the THML brand and the Buddy Love and Johnny Was brands.”

Kelsey Frederick, a first year teacher in Gordon, was shopping at Silver Wings for new clothing to start her first year of teaching.

“I love this boutique it’s my favorite one to come to,” Frederick said.
