A 36-year-old Erath County man was shot in the neck Friday morning while traveling in his vehicle near County Road 539 and FM 2481 between Three-Way and Duffau.

“He was in his vehicle and the window was down,” said Chief Deputy Heath Crossland. “He was shot a single time in the neck and was able to make it back to a house where a female acquaintance was waiting.”

Crossland said it is unclear at this point if the female is the victim’s wife, girlfriend or friend.

“She loaded him up in the backseat and started driving to the hospital,” Crossland said. “She called us and we intercepted them on Highway 67 and FM 2481. (The victim) was in a bad way and was airlifted to a hospital in Waco.”

Crossland said investigators interviewed the woman in an attempt to identify the suspect(s) and to find out if any vehicles were involved.

“At this time the condition of the victim is still unknown and investigators believe this was an isolated incident and not a random act,” Crossland said. “Investigators are working to verify early reports of a possible suspect and suspect vehicle.”
