It’s still too early to file but that’s not stopping Huckabay resident Greg Stewart from announcing his candidacy to run for commissioner of precinct 4 currently held by Scot Jackson.

Stewart will face off against Jackson in the Republican primary in 2018.

“I enjoy construction and working outdoors,” Stewart said in an interview Tuesday at the Empire-Tribune office. “I also enjoy working for Erath County; it’s home.”

Stewart is currently the bailiff for the district court.

Prior to that he was a sergeant at the Erath County County Sheriff’s Office from 2009-2016.

Stewart was born and raised in Erath County and served on the Huckabay school board for seven years.

"My family has been deeply-rooted here since the late 1800s,” Stewart said. “I’m not going anywhere and I enjoy working for the people.”

Stewart said the complaints he hears most about precinct 4 are road conditions and safety.

“There is always room for improvement in any county office and you have to have goals for improvement,” he said. “If I’m elected I will be available to the people and the precinct.”

Stewart and his wife Julie have been married for 23 years and have two sons - Garrett, 20, a kinesiology major at Tarleton State University, and Jason, 17, a senior at Huckabay High School.
