GORMAN—Services for Luther Ross Wilson, 90, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Watson officiating. Burial will be held in the Gorman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the funeral home.
He was born in Brownwood, Texas to Luther J. Wilson and Lucy Reese Wilson. He married Rowena Lucile Sheets on Dec. 23, 1949 in Gorman, Texas.
Following his graduation from Daniel Baker College, in Brownwood, he
served as a coach, high school principal and superintend in Gorman
from 1949 -1956. Due to his outstanding performance in football Ross was inducted into the Daniel Baker College athletic hall of honor.
In 1956, he was selected manager of the Southwestern Peanut Growers Association, a large peanut co-operative, headquartered in Gorman. During his tenure as Southwest Peanut Growers Association manager he headed every national peanut industry organization, which included producers, shellers, and manufacturers.
He served as Southwest Peanut Growers Association manager from 1956 until his retirement in 2000. He was the recipient of numerous state, regional and national awards in that period. He has been a Hereford breeder since 1960.
Luther Ross Wilson is survived by niece, Jerrie Sherrod of Llano; great-nephew, Joe David Sherrod of Spicewood and three great-nieces, Cathy Klafehn of Flower Mound, Margaret Rogers and Sandra Dobbs and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rowena; his parents; sisters, Mable Sherrod and Henrietta Williams; and nephews, Joe Bob Sherrod and Jack Sherrod.
