Three of the TexAnns starting lineup scored in double digits Thursday night as Tarleton began Lone Star Conference play on the right foot with a 72-58 win over Midwestern State.
The TexAnns came out and set the tone early.
After Midwestern scored the game’s first basket it took them more than half of the first quarter to see their score figure change again.
Mackenzie Hailey had three steals in that span for Tarleton and helped fuel a 15-2 run for the TexAnns who led the Mustangs 15-4 with 2:21 remaining in the first.
By the time the first quarter had ended, Midwestern had committed nine turnovers, compared to only three for Tarleton.
The second quarter saw Midwestern fall even further behind as Tiara Tatum scored five points in what ended up being a 10-0 run for Tarleton to start the quarter.
While it had been all Tarleton up until then, Midwestern did manage to cut their deficit back to 12 with a 7-0 run mid-way through the quarter. That lead held until halftime where the TexAnns led 34-22.
Tarleton had their best shooting quarter statistically in the the third.
The TexAnns shot 8-14 (57 percent) in the third and outscored the Mustangs 22-17 to take a 17 point, 56-39 lead into the game’s final 10 minutes.
The Tarleton defense kept the pressure up in the fourth quarter as they continued to force Midwestern turnovers, a total of 26 on the night, to maintain their lead and seal the win in the fourth.
Sophomore Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns in several stat categories Thursday, including a career high performance for points scored with 21. She also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and recorded six steals.
Also scoring in double digits was Tiara Tatum (14), Bailey Wipff (17) and Travanti Downes (11).
The TexAnns are now 1-0 in LSC play and 2-4 on the season. They’ll be back in action on Saturday when Cameron travels to Wisdom Gym.
