Hurrah for Morgan Mill!

We have all been following Stephenville soccer playoff games because one of our own is on the team, Daisy Richards. It has been exciting to see a freshman make the team. Daisy was a standout student at Morgan Mill and expected her to do great things in high school. Every year when I asked the teachers who their Student of the Month might be, their response would be Daisy.

Looking back on 2005 in Morgan Mill, one finds the Community Center having its opening on April 16.

In the April 10, newspaper, Billie Spindor was having a big surprise birthday party. The doors to the Community Center, “Welcome to Morgan Mill” had been given in honor of Billie and her late husband, Caso.

The rock sign at the Community Center was donated by David and Edy Brock. In the April 24 column, it was pointed out that the pies and cake auction to pay off the Community Center raised $31, 670. 50. Jakie Laughlin and Ron Weiger were the successful auctioneers.

One of the fun things that were auctioned was the Alphia Larner’s first and second grade class of 1950s quilt. Each square was sewn by the mothers of the students. Seventeen out of the 22 represented on the quilt were present at the auction as well as Mrs. Larner.

The quilt brought $3,450 and Mrs. Larner was in tears. The quilt is hanging in the Community Center as well as the Church of Christ quilt made in 1960s honoring their minister J.B. Tomlinson.

In 2006 the April student of the month was Jaye Davis, granddaughter of Roscoe and Alice Davis. The big event that month was Jakie Laughlin’s retirement party at the Community Center. He had been on the Ag Texas board of directors for decades. The valedictorian of Morgan Mill School was Heather Bostock.

Back to the present, Community Supper will be Thursday, April 20, at 6:30. The entertainment will be brought by Heritage Harmony, Sherry and Glenda. Bring your favorite potluck dish and come enjoy some Morgan Mill home cooking.

The Pavilion is up at the school just in time for the hot May days. Two picnic tables are included so come and watch the kids. The PTF has spent a lot of time and energy in replacing shade for the staff.
