Special to the E-T

Donald Smart, a long-time resident of the Stephenville area, was recently honored at the 70th annual meeting of Texas Soil and Water Conservation District directors held in Lubbock.

Smart was awarded the Presidentís Award for Outstanding Service in Conservation, the most prestigious award the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts can bestow upon an individual. He has served as a director of the Cross Timbers Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) since 1998 and in that time has served on numerous committees.

Friends and fellow board members describe him as a life-long advocate for youth activities. He was instrumental in the coordination and organization of the Texas Wildlife Alliance for Youth contest. The contest offers opportunities for 4-H and FFA students to expand their knowledge of conservation and the outdoors, while offering scholarships to contest winners.
