A delegation from Ranger College traveled to Austin on Thursday, October 21, to seek final approval for the long awaited and much anticipated RN Program. The delegation was not disappointed.
Dr. Robin Caldwell, State Board of Nursing Consultant, praised the Ranger College proposal after which the Board voted unanimously to approve the program. The first 30 students will begin their nursing studies in Brownwood in January.
Dr. Bill Campion, President, noted that the nursing program marks a significant step forward for the entire college district. The nursing program is located at the Brownwood Regional Hospital and will draw students from an eleven county area surrounding Brownwood.
State Representative Jim Keffer called the event “a great occasion for Brownwood, Brown County, Eastland County and other adjacent areas.” Mayor Stephen Haynes, Brownwood Mayor, termed the event “a great day, the beginning of something exciting and beneficial.”
Bert Massey, long time Brownwood Mayor, recently retired, said “Ranger College did everything they promised to do, quickly and with great expertise.”
Campion noted that organizations and individuals in Brown County had already raised more than $600,000 to get this program up and running. The college’s President farther elaborated by noting that this kind of support “made the whole thing possible.”
Besides Campion and Representative Keffer, those in attendance included Ranger College’s Dr. Don Bostic, Executive Vice President and Marnita Guinn, Dean of Associate Degree Nursing; Doug Crawley, President of the Ranger College Board of Regents; Mrs. Sandi Herod, member, Board of Regents; Matt Maxfield, CEO, Brownwood Regional Medical Center; Bryan Kight, Vice President, Texas State Technical College; Daniel Lee, Student Government President, Ranger College, and prospective nursing student. Members of the Brown County Advisory Committee in attendance included: James Campbell, Chair, and President, Brownwood EDC; Robert Porter, Vice-Chairman; Stuart Coleman, President, Coleman Distributing Company; J. Fred Perry; Bill King, Past President Early EDC; Gene Deason, Editor, Brownwood Bulletin; and Mrs. Laura Terhune, President, Brownwood Chamber of Commerce. Also attending were Mrs. Wanda Ferguson, Executive Vice-President, Early Chamber of Commerce and Mrs. Lori Ferguson, Nursing Consultant.
