Stephenville suffered its first District 7-3A baseball loss Friday night when Venus knocked off the Yellow Jackets 7-3 at James T. Young Field.
Patrick Mathis was 4-for-4 from the plate with a home run, a triple and 3 RBIs to lead the Bulldogs past the Jackets. Pitcher Hayden Stanford was also key, striking out nine Stephenville hitters while allowing just five hits and a walk. He surrendered three runs - two earned - in six innings.
Brock Morrison homered for Stephenville and Daniel Bullard was 2-for-3 from the plate. Bullard was the only batter with a hit in the bottom six spots of the Jacket lineup.
Arizona State pledge Maddux Conger didn't have his best stuff on the hill for Stephenville. He worked four innings, surrendering four hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. All three runs scored against the junior were unearned.
Josh Bulla walked four batters and surrendered four runs - three earned - in two innings, and Ben Martin shut out the Bulldogs in the seventh.
Stephenville's lead atop the 7-3A standings has been trimmed to just a game. Venus is now alone in second.
