The deadline to register to vote in the May 10 city general election is quickly approaching.
Residents interested in casting a ballot in city council and school board races must register by Thursday, April 10, at the county's registrar's office.
Campaigning in several hotly-contested races is already in full swing, with candidates vying for various offices hosting fundraising events, meet and greets and jockeying for support.
One of the most highly-watched races in the city is the one for Stephenville mayor. Mayor Kenny Weldon is seeking his second term, but faces a challenge from city councilman Brady Pendleton.
Other city council races include Place 2 between incumbent Malcolm Cross and challenger Boyd Waggoner; Place 4 between incumbent Russ McDanel and challenger Perry Elliott; Place 6 between incumbent Alan Nix and challenger Adam Cash; Place 8 between incumbent Scott Evans and challenger Jerry Warren; and Place 7 between Rusty Jergins and Charon Zachery. Justin Allison announced last week that he is dropping out of the race for Place 7, but his name will still appear on the ballot, according to city secretary Cindy Stafford.
In the only contested race for SISD school board, Cole Parks and Danny Brandon will vie for Place 6, vacated by longtime board member Ora Lee Leeth who is not running for re-election.
Early voting will take place from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on April 28 - May 2 and from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. on May 5-6 at the Erath County Courthouse.
