LAWTON, Okla. – The Tarleton State Texans snapped a mini two-game skid with a pair of Lone Star Conference wins over Cameron at McCord Field in Lawton, Okla. Frday.
Tarleton picked up a pair of runs in the second inning of game one to take an early two-run lead and then added to it with another run in the top of the third. Jared Musgrove reached base on an error early in the second inning and then came home to score on a home run from Noel Nevarez. Alvaro Moreno then singled home Rustin Thomas in the third inning to give the Texans a three-run advantage.
Cameron would score its only run of game one in the fourth inning, but the Texans tacked on an insurance run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory. Luke Slentz drove in Moreno in the sixth inning, while Andrew Jacobi registered a sacrifice fly to score Kevin Meredith in the top half of the seventh.
Moreno led the Texans with three hits at the plate in game one, while Thomas and Slentz had a pair of hits each.
Jacob French (W, 5-1) picked up the complete-game-win for the Texans, giving up just the one while scattering six hits and striking out four.
Drew Reidt (L, 2-4) took the loss for the Aggies in game one, giving up all five runs on nine hits and striking out two batters.
Tarleton would fall behind 3-0 early in game two before finally brining in its first run when Jonathan Schmitz singled home Jared Musgrove in the top of the fourth inning. Slentz then tied things up in the next inning with a two-run single that scored both Thomas and Meredith on the play.
The Aggies came right back though in the bottom half of the fifth inning with an RBI-single from Kas Sanders that helped give CU back the lead at 4-3.
Nevarez countered with his second home run of the day – a solo shot over the left field fence in the top of the sixth inning, which tied the game at 4-4 and Tarleton would then later retake the lead in the seventh inning on Musgrove's RBI-single to center that brought home Thomas.
Nevarez would then lead off the top of the eighth inning with a single to center field and he later came home on passed ball to help give the Texans a two-run lead, up 6-4.
Tarleton tacked on another run in the top of the ninth inning when Moreno singled and later scored on an Aggie error.
Lenz (S, 6) came into the game in the ninth inning and shut the Aggies down in one-two-three fashion for his LSC-leading sixth save of the season.
Colton Burleson got the start for the Texans, but it was Garrett Kelly (W, 3-0) who picked up the win in relief. Burleson gave up four runs in five full innings of work and struck out a pair of batters, while Kelly allowed just a pair of hits in his two innings of duty.
Matt Herrick pitched a one-hit eighth inning before giving way to Lenz in the ninth.
The Texans improved to 15-7 overall and are now two games over .500 in Lone Star Conference play with a 6-4 mark.
The Aggies dropped to 6-14 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
The teams were rained out Saturday and will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. today.
