Both Tarleton State basketball teams will play Texas A&M-International in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championships that tip off with regional tournaments this weekend.
After winning the LSC Championship Saturday night, the No. 5 Texans (27-2) are the second seed in the men's South Central Regional, being hosted by top seed Metropolitan State College at Auroria Event Center in Denver.
A&M-International's men (22-8) are the seventh seed after winning the Heartland Conference tourney. TAMUI finished second in the Heartland's regular season standings and has a 10-1 record against opponents also on Tarleton's schedule. The Texans are 9-0 against common opponents.
Tarleton and TAMUI have played just twice with the Texans winning in Stephenville in 2008 and 2009. They have never met in the postseason.
On the women's side, the TexAnns (21-8) are the third seed after finishing as runner-up in the LSC tourney. TAMUI (19-8) is the sixth seed after finishing second in the Heartland's regular season race and being eliminated in the opening round of the conference tournament.
Between like opponents, Tarleton is 11-1 to TAMUI's 4-6. It will also be just the third meeting between the women's programs, the first since 2007. Also like the men, the women's programs have never faced off in the post season.
The women's tournament is hosted by top seed West Texas A&M in Canyon. Games begin Friday with semifinal contests on Saturday and the championship on Monday.
The men's tournament tips off Saturday. Semifinals are Sunday and the championship on Tuesday.
Regional champions advance to the Elite Eight to compete for the national title. The women's event is being hosted by Gannon University in Erie, Pa., while the men will crown their champ at Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind.
