Stephenville dug itself an early hole and could never climb out against Kennedale Friday night.
The Honeybees lost 61-42 despite a career-high 19 points from junior guard Cassidy Cline and 11 from senior guard Tiara Green.
"We missed a couple of layups and close shots right at the start and we got in a hole," Thorpe explained. "We just couldn't fight out of it."
Not that they didn't make a valiant effort to do so, cutting a 20 point deficit to seven before Kennedale pulled away again.
"We would get close and then we'd commit a turnover, or miss an easy shot or bust an assignment defensively," Thorpe said. "Kennedale's good, you can't make a lot of mistakes like that against them."
It was a rematch of last season's Region I final that Kennedale won 48-45. The Lady Cats went on to reach the 3A state final.
Stephenville also picked up six points Friday from Lariat Larner in her varsity debut.
"She plays such good defense that I knew we were going to have a hard time keeping her on the JV," Thorpe said of Larner. "She did a good job, that was a positive."
Lyndi Graham and Bethanie Boucher chipped in two points each for the Bees, who compete in the Mansfield Rotary Invitational Thursday-Saturday.
