The Tarleton State softball team has announced its schedule for the 2014 season, set to begin on Feb. 1.

"Our 2014 schedule is a tough one and it leans a little heavy on the away games, but with good reason," said 18th-year Tarleton head coach Julie Mata. "We were able to fill February up with some tournaments against quality in-region competition, which is always crucial when it comes to rankings.

"We finished in the top 10 in our region the last few years because we've made sure to play nothing but regionally significant games," she added. "If we take care of business early on the road, it will put us in a good position and prepare us for the tough Lone Star Conference match-ups that follow."

Tarleton opens the season with three straight, six-game tournaments on the road - in Arkadelphia, Ark., Durant, Okla., and Canyon.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Tarleton makes its home debut with a doubleheader against St. Mary's. The TexAnns will then make their final non-conference tournament trip of the season, visiting San Antonio for the St. Mary's Invitational.

Tarleton returns home to begin Lone Star Conference play with Angelo State on Feb. 28, followed by a three-game trip to Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The LSC has made a new addition to the schedule this season, debuting the Lone Star Conference Softball Showcase March 13-16. It's a six-game, four-day event in Wichita Falls.

"The LSC Showcase should be a tough set of games," said Mata. "I am excited about the format and look forward to seeing a schedule for it when the LSC puts it out."

Tarleton concludes the regular season with LSC action with the exception of a doubleheader against Texas-Permian Basin. The LSC Championship is set for May 2-3.
