It's Saturday, Sept. 21, my birthday.
And here I am 'working' all day, wrapping up Friday night's bevy of sports activity, and keeping up with the flurry of events taking place today, trying to get it all packaged up and ready for the Sunday paper you're reading now.
I'm reminded of a quote I've heard several times lately. "Find something you love to do, and you'll never have to work a day in your life."
It's my birthday, and I'm not "working" a lick. I'm doing what I love and loving what I do.
Area sports teams have certainly helped the birthday weekend along. It's hard not to enjoy writing about area teams scoring victory after victory.
It's still just midmorning Saturday, but thus far Dublin, my hometown, has scored a dominating homecoming victory - I didn't cover that one, staff writer Caleb McCaig was all over it - Stephenville, Hico and Stephenville FAITH have also won on the gridiron, the Lady Lions and Honeybees have won in prep volleyball and even Tarleton's TexAnns managed a four-set win in its LSC opener.
Today, we'll add another Tarleton volleyball match, Tarleton's season-opening cross country meet and, of course, Texans football to the ledger.
So I'll spend my birthday visiting with and watching some of my favorite people in all of the Cross Timbers - our beloved coaches. We're so blessed to have so many coaches throughout this region of the state who truly do put kids first. The safety, success and daily maturation of area youth is their business, and business is good.
I'll spend my birthday silently cheering - you can't 'cheer' while working, you know - on more of our area student-athletes as they make the sacrifices and put in the hard work necessary to represent our local educational institutions with great pride, and always in a first-class manner.
I'll spend it watching my 'other' alma mater - Tarleton State - playing my favorite sport of all - football.
Most of all, I'll spend the rest of my birthday doing what I love, what I'm passionate about - bringing the stories of all these wonderful coaches and athletes to you, our readers and customers.
Covering winning teams is fun. Covering winners - on the field and off - is an absolute blast.
So I'm 'working' on my birthday. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
