Tarleton State fared well against Division II competition, but Division I foes and the ever-agonizing weather delays were another story when the TexAnns opened their fall tennis season at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces (NM).

Senior Melanie Barnes and junior Mackenzie Mitchell had the most successful weekend, winning the consolation title in doubles play.

Barnes and Mitchell opened with a tough 8-0 loss to New Mexico, relegating them to the consolation bracket. But they bounced back strong against Division II foes, beating Grand Canyon, 8-5, then torching Western new Mexico, 8-1, for in the consolation final.

Silvia Nieva and April Downing dropped their opener to a New Mexico team, beat a Western New Mexico duo 8-5 then fell to another Western New Mexico club by the same 8-5 score. If they had won, it would have been an all-Tarleton consolation final.

In a separate flight, Tarleton's Alicia Perez and Marina Rull-Valdivieso and another team of Ivana Zecevic and Luiza Adas were each eliminated with losses in their opening two matches.

Perez beat a Grand Canyon player to reach the championship bracket in singles play, but lost in the next round to New Mexico State.

Adas dropped her first singles match, won the next to reach the consolation final, but weather stepped in and prevented the match from being played.
