Established in 1990, the Friends of the Dick Smith Library is a volunteer organization dedicated to the support of the university’s library. The organization funds the acquisition of educational amenities which lie outside of the library budget; helps sponsor discussions, lectures, book talks, and other scholarly activities; and aids in the creation of endowments, bequests, and other gifts to the university’s library.?Bill Dennis, Friends of the Dick Smith Library board president, said the library serves not only students, but the public at large, and Friends membership is open to all.

“The symbiotic relationship between the university and the community at large is enhanced by the activities of the Friends and the open-door policies of the library,” Dennis said. “We appreciate and look forward to the continued participation of the business community of Stephenville, and of the community at large, in support of the Dick Smith Library.”
