Caesar Vazquez was pushing a broken down minibike across the South Loop Sunday morning when he was struck by a truck and horse trailer.

According to witness statements, Vazquez, 25, was looking down at the bike as he pushed it into the roadway, never looking up until the driver of the truck honked at him.

But it was too late.

The driver, who was headed eastbound, swerved, but struck him, according to Lt. Doug McClammy.

"All the witnesses told our officers Vazquez didn't look up from the bike as he entered the crosswalk headed north," McClammy said. "When the driver of the truck saw him, he honked and swerved to the left in hopes of missing him. But the pedestrian was struck by the truck's front bumper."

McClammy said Vazquez was conscious and speaking with first responders. He was taken by air ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he is listed as in stable condition.
