Hico (5-0) strayed unbeaten with an eyebrow-raising 41-37 victory over 3A Springtown in the opening round of a tournament in Santo Thursday.
The 1A Lady Tigers picked up 16 points from Stacey Underwood and held a narrow lead throughout after outscoring Springtown 19-10 in the second quarter.
"It was a battle, and we did a pretty good job of handling the pressure," said Hico head coach Brad Stegall. "Hopefully, we got better from it. We should, because they're legit. They have a dang good team."
Springtown had previously taken reigning 2A champ Brock to overtime.
"Against a team like that…I was just so pleased with our performance. Now we have to do it all over again (Friday)," Stegall said.
The Lady Tigers meet their first Class A opponent when they challenge No. 1 Lipan in round two.
