WACO - Burnet decided it would be a good idea to take the field at Waco ISD Stadium Friday night by running through a sign saying "Remember 7-on-7."

As if No. 3 Stephenville needed the reminder.

The Yellow Jackets scored at 7-on-7 pace in the first half, and unlike when the Bulldogs upset previously unbeaten Stephenville (9-1) in the opening round of the 7-on-7 state tournament in July, Burnet (5-6) couldn't keep up.

Stephenville amassed 543 yards of offense and scored on its initial seven possessions, building a 35-0 lead after the first play of the second quarter en rout to a 56-27 rout in the opening round of the 3A Division I playoffs.

Stephenville faces Kennedale in the area round at 2 p.m. next Friday in Mineral Wells after Kennedale shredded Burkburnett 68-0 Friday. Stephenville, which is in the playoffs for the 30th time and the 23rd in the last 24 years, improved to 21-2 in its last 23 bi-district games.

Tyler Jones passed for four touchdowns and rushed for another - all in the first half - on his way to another blockbuster performance of 18-23 passing for 313 yards and five carries for 70 without a turnover. He began the scoring with a 10-yard run, then hit Brice Gunter with two touchdown passes and Jarrett Stidham and Brock Morrison with one each. By the end of the first quarter, Stephenville led 28-0 with four touchdowns by four different players.

A fifth offensive weapon scored on the first play of the second when Witt Westbrook burst free for a 38-yard TD, and Alex Sanchez made it six TDs by six Jackets when he sprinted to pay dirt from 53 yards out less than two minutes later. Sanchez rushed for 80 yards, Westbrook for 63 and as a team Stephenville rushed for 230.

Burnet finally got on the board with the first of Cameron Langley's scores on a one-yard run. He had all four Burnet touchdowns, the others coming on a 3-yard run in the third, a seven-yard reception early in the fourth and an 81-yard catch in the final minute. He had four catches for 132 yards and scored four times on just six offensive touches.

Gunter followed Langley's first-half score with an impressive 52-yard catch-and-run, breaking a host of tackles before striding out the final 30 yards to pay dirt with a pile of defenders left behind.

Stephenville's first-half scoring barrage came with master efficiency. The Yellow Jackets marched 82 yards in eight plays, 66 yards in seven plays and again in five, 53 yards in two plays, 71 yards in one play, 48 yards in one play and 70 yards in three plays. The Jackets' average first-half possession lasted 3.8 plays and covered 65.1 yards. They had 456 yards of offense at halftime.

Stephenville's lone second-half score came on an 89-yard kickoff return by Preston Brown, his third return score of the season.

Burnet recovered two onside kicks in the first half and executed trick plays twice to convert fourth downs to help make the final score respectable. Derek Kiser was 20-33 passing for 236 yards, two scores and an interception. He was sacked three times and forced out of the pocket on several other occasions. He was even flagged for a 13-yard intentional grounding penalty while being buried by Stephenville's Chase Varnado.

Trenton Hafley rushed 29 times for 130 yards for Burnet, while Jordan Barnard hauled in 10 receptions for 69 yards. The Bulldogs produced 376 total yards of offense, much of it coming after Stephenville built its huge lead.
