The Optimist Club will host its annual Toys for Kids bowling tournament from 9 a.m. - noon Saturday at Lone Star Lanes.
"This is the third year for us to hold a bowling tournament and it's still growing," said chairman Charles Finegan. "We used to have a golf tournament but changed course recently, and I think this is much more successful. It's the wrong time of year for golf anyway."
Finegan said most of the money is made through corporate and lane sponsors and the money from the entry fees goes to pay for the event. He said even though they have some sponsors already, the club is still looking for more.
Last year the event raised $4,200 and Finegan said they are set to surpass that amount this year.
"We are really hoping to raise more than last year," he said. "It looks like we are going to be able to and that's great because this event brings in about 60 percent of the funds we need to purchase the toys for the year."
The Optimist Club is the main sponsor for Toys for Kids, a program that brings Christmas to area families that might not have one otherwise. All of the money raised at the bowling tournament will stay in Stephenville. The toys are even purchased locally.
If you want to join in the fun, it's not too late. The club is accepting registrations through Friday. Registration is $20 per adult and $15 per child under 12. This fee covers three games, shoes and a pizza lunch for each player. Participants will be in four or five person teams and will bowl for the top spots. Prizes (gift cards to WalMart) will be given to first, second and third place teams.
