The Stephenville ISD board of trustees has appointed Susan Hutchins to the board place left open after Jason Westbrook's resignation. In the closed session of the meeting, board members discussed recruiting someone to serve in the position until the next election cycle in May.

In the subsequent open session, it was decided the board would appoint someone who had experience. Hutchins, who had served on the board from 2000-09, was a unanimous choice among the trustees. Board President Dr. Ann Calahan was asked to approach Hutchins to ask if she would be willing to serve. Hutchins described her willingness to take on the task as a “no brainer.”

“I was humbled when asked to serve,” Hutchins said. “I feel honored to do it. It's like I'm coming out of retirement. I felt a calling to do it.”

Although she said it is unlikely she will run for the place in May, Hutchins has nothing but positive memories of the years she has already served on the board.

“I never had a regret in those nine years,” she said. “So coming back was not a difficult decision.”

The position for place 6 will be on the ballot in May for anyone who wishes to make a bid to fill Westbrook's unexpired term lasting through May 2014.

Hutchins' appointment will be made official at the regularly scheduled board meeting on Nov. 19.
