Meals on Wheels of Erath County (MOWEC) and the Stephenville Senior Center have joined the North Central Texas Council on Governments (NCTCOG) to bring technology and food to area seniors. The joint venture is part of a statewide beta test focused on revitalizing Texan senior centers.

MOWEC Executive Director Whitney Lee said MOWEC is excited to be part of a program that could serve as a template for other centers.

"It's not very often that we get asked to be a part of something like this - something, that if successful, other groups and organizations will look at and replicate," Lee said.

Lee said the ball got rolling barely two months ago when representatives from NCTCOG approached MOWEC about partnering with local senior centers.

"This program involves the Stephenville Senior Center and the Hood County senior center. Both facilities will be given equipment they can use to Skype," Lee said. "So if they are doing a fall prevention class in Granbury, Stephenville residents can tune in and visa versa."

To be eligible for the program, however, the centers also needed to provide congregant meals.

"That's where we come in," Lee said. "We provide congregant meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the senior center."

Congregant meals are similar to the home-delivered meals MOWEC already provides to home-bound clients, except they are served on-site at the Stephenville Senior Center. To be eligible for a congregant meal, clients need to be a resident of Erath County and over the age of 60. Lee said there is also a little bit of paperwork to fill out.

"Two months to get a brand new program up and running is not a lot of time," Lee said. "But Sandy Morgan at the senior center, Drew Wells and others at the city have been very supportive of this program. Their willingness to put in the work required made this possible and we're just excited to be part of it."

Anyone interested in finding out more about the new Skype technology or signing up for the congregant meals should contact the Stephenville Senior Center at 918-1288 or MOWEC at 965-3510.
