I would like to thank Ms. Jessie Horton for the opportunity to comment on her Boy Scouts’ article prior to release last Friday. The support Scouting receives from the Stephenville Empire-Tribune is indeed appreciated.  There is one thing I would like to clarify from the Friday article on the Boy Scouts. Someone reading the article last Friday may surmise that youth protection in the Boy Scouts of America is a recent and reactive program.  Clearly that is not the case. The Boys Scouts of America has been at the forefront of developing, implementing and improving programs focused on the protection of its youth members and adult leaders during the 102 years of our existence.

The attached articles “100 Years of Enhancing Efforts to Protect Youth” and “Child Sexual Abuse Awareness and Prevention in America: A Timeline” details our efforts and may be read by your readers at http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/BSAYouthProtection/BSA_Communications/Timeline.aspx http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/BSAYouthProtection/Media_Center/SocietalTimeline.aspx

Thank you for your support of our local Scouting Programs

Sincerely,

Larry D. Smith
