Twenty-one students from Stephenville High School choir competed in Granbury Sept. 15 for the first-round of the Texas All-State Choir (TASC) auditions. More than 800 students entered in the TMEA Region 7 District contest. The four-audition process to qualify for TASC involves months of dedication on the part of the students. Only 1-2 percent of the students who begin the audition process reach the All-State level. Some students began their preparation in June and will not complete the process till the final TASC concert performance, as part of the Texas Music Educatorís Convention in February.
Through attending workshops, sectionals, and one on one tutoring with Mr. John Tucker (director of SHS Choir) the students demonstrated a strong work ethic and desire for success. The students had to sing their prepared music for Mr. Tucker prior to attending the competition, and then were judged by five professional vocal judges from behind a curtain so the judging was based strictly on vocal technique and musicianship and not school affiliation or appearance. Their hard work and dedication paid off as 17 out of 21 advanced to the 2nd round audition which will be held on Oct. 13 in Burleson.
SHS Choir is enjoying their highest enrollment since Mr. Tucker arrived five years ago, and the standard of success continues to grow. The public will have the opportunity to hear a few of the selections from the TASC contest repertoire during the Fall Concert being presented on Oct. 16 at SHS. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7:15. It is free to the public and encouraged to attend in support of the 125 students in the SHS Choir program.
