Meals on Wheels of Erath County (MOWEC) is hosting a volunteer appreciation dinner and training event on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the United Cooperative Services building from 5-6:30p.m.

MOWEC hosts the event every year in an effort to keep volunteers up-to-date on policies and procedures, as well as offer them a chance to sit back and be served for the evening.

MOWEC Executive Director Whitney Lee said the organization relies on approximately 100 individual volunteers and volunteer groups to deliver lunches to more than 200 Erath County residents every day.

"We've got some of the best volunteers out there," Lee said. "These folks not only brave the Texas heat and unpredictable winters, but donate their time, vehicle, and gas just to make sure our clients get at least one hot meal a day."

Lee said during fiscal year 2011, MOWEC served a total of 45,157 meals. And the organization has served approximately 43,000 meals so far this year.

"That's a lot of food," Lee said. "We only have three paid staff members, so we are very heavily dependent on our volunteers every day. They are literally the wheels of this operation."

The local Knights of Columbus will cater the event again this year, which means the MOWEC staff and board members can spend the evening serving the volunteers for a change.

"It's such a fun evening with music and entertainment, and the last few years the Knights have gotten involved and donated the food," Lee said. "This is definitely the 'Year of the Volunteer.' We have volunteers that have been with us since we started more than 15 years ago and we're planning on doing something special for all our volunteers, but especially those that have been with us for such a long time."

All MOWEC volunteers are invited to attend and can RSVP online through the Web site at www.ErathMOW.org or call 254-965-3510.
