Stephenville's stay at No. 1 in Class 3A ended almost as soon as it began.
The Yellow Jackets will no doubt take a tumble in the rankings after a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown by Mario Alberto Arrambide sealed Monterrey Prepa Tec's (Mexico) 27-17 upset at Tarleton Memorial Stadium Friday night.
Stephenville trimmed a 20-point deficit to 20-17 with a 49-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Jones and a 30-yard field goal by Luis Garcia in the third quarter, followed by a 30-yard TD strike from Jones to Brock Morrison midway through the fourth.
Jarrett Stidham intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it to the 20 to give Stephenville a chance with 2:14 left, but a sack and two penalties left Jones facing second-and-long when his screen pass to Westbrook was batted then picked by Arrambide.
The Jackets also lost a pair of fumbles, and Prepa Tec scored 17 points off the three turnovers. The Borregos had 280 yards of offense to Stephenville's 259.
Stephenville hosts three-time defending champ Aledo, a winner over Highland Park in its opener, at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
