Stephenville FAITH flexed its state championship muscle in another scrimmage Friday night, blasting Mineral Wells Community Christian 11 touchdowns to one at Miller Stadium in Mineral Wells.
"We feel like our offense can score with anyone, but the real pride of our team is our defense," FAITH head coach Cody Martin said of his unit that allowed only one touchdown in two scrimmages. "I know if I get a choice this year I'm going to buck the six-man trend and put our defense on the field first and let them set the tone.
"That's a testament to our defensive coordinator, Nick Braun, and the job he's done with those guys," Martin added. "I'm an offensive coach, so sometimes I'm busy worrying about that side, but it's fun to watch him and our defense do what they do."
Moran had only two first downs against the Knight defense last week, and Martin reported the Knights shut down MWCCS after its early score.
Offensively, the Knights have been crisp as well, scoring 21 touchdowns in two weeks.
Both FAITH quarterbacks - starter Shadd Cole and backup Joey Braun - fired two touchdowns and rushed for one Friday.
"Shadd is still limited just as a precaution. He'll be ready to go next week when we should be at 100 percent," Martin said. "But Joey did a great job for us again Friday night."
Daniel Winkler rushed for a score and received another, Justin Baugh hauled in two TD passes, Josh Yant rushed for two scores, Jared Veldhuizen rushed for one and Jacob Thompson rushed for one. Lucas Leamons also found the end zone on a reception.
"It's good to have eight different players score," Martin said. "That's a lot of weapons."
FAITH opens defense of its Texas Christian Athletic League Division II title when the Knights visit Willow Park Trinity Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
