Candidates interested in serving in place 5 on the Stephenville City Council should begin planning their campaign strategy.

The city council voted Tuesday to place the vacancy left by former councilman Alan Nash on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Nash resigned from the city council in July after he was appointed district attorney by Gov. Rick Perry. The position will fill the remainder of Nash's term, which expires in May.

The council also had the option to appoint a qualified candidate to fill place 5 until a replacement was elected.

Councilman Doug Svien said citizens would prefer to speak up and have their voices heard rather than someone being appointed to the place.

Those interested in running for the spot don't have much time.

Candidates can begin filing now at City Hall. The deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23.
