In a rare move, gas prices fell leading up to Memorial Day weekend and they haven't stopped falling yet.

On Thursday, prices in Stephenville hovered around $3.44 per gallon of unleaded gasoline, and many fuel stops expect to lower prices again soon.

Motorists filling up elsewhere in Erath County, however, pay more.

Most gas stations in Dublin charge more than $3.50 per gallon. The highest gas prices in Erath can be found in Bluff Dale where unleaded gasoline is $3.57 per gallon.

As of press time Thursday, the state average has fallen to $3.44, an almost 7 percent drop from one month ago when Texans paid $3.70 on average, according to AAA.

"Gas prices are still historically high, but it's starting to feel cheap by comparison to where we were just months ago," said Jason Toews, co-founder of GasBuddy.com, which tracks prices across the country, in a statement.

Toews and other analysts expect prices to continue falling well into June, possible by 10 cents per gallon or more, before the industry begins pumping prices up again later this summer.

Even if prices begin rising in July and August most observers believe prices will stay below $4 per gallon.
