The Texas Iwo Jima Monument, on the campus of the Marine Military Academy, a prep school in Harlingen, is a must-see for the visitors to the Rio Grande Valley.
The statue is the original mold for the monument in Washington D.C. The artist, Felix DeWeldon donated this mold to M.M.A. in 1981. One of the flag raisers, Marine Cpl. Harlon Block of Weslaco, TX is buried at the base of the statue. He was the one shown at the base of the flag pole. Cpl. Block was killed in combat a few weeks later on Iwo Jima. This Memorial Day let us remember those and all who gave their lives for our freedom.
