WACO - In the end, Stephenville couldn't get the timely hit it needed.
That and errors in the field made the difference when Cleburne scored seven unearned runs and won 7-0 in Game 3 of a 4A Region I quarterfinal series at Veterans Stadium Saturday afternoon.
A runner reached on an error and scored for Cleburne in the top of the first, and an error kept alive a disastrous sixth inning when six Cleburne runners crossed the plate.
The teams split the first two games with each winning at home. Cleburne won 3-2 in Game 1 Thursday and Stephenville stayed alive with a 5-4 win in Game 2 Friday.
Stephenville had a bases loaded opportunity with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't cash in. A ground ball produced a fielder's choice to retire the side before Cleburne blew it open in the sixth.
All Stephenville's hits were singles, and the two that did not come in the fifth were quickly erased on a stolen base attempt in the first and a double play in the second.
Floyd didn't allow an earned run and was touched up for seven hits and a walk while striking out six in 5-2/3 innings. Brock Morrison was perfect over the final 1-1/3.
The younger Morrison was the only relief pitcher Stephenville called on in the playoffs. Senior Trent Morrison pitched three complete games including an area-round shutout of Aledo, and senior Brian Picha went the distance twice, recording Game 2 wins against both Mansfield Summit in bi-district and Cleburne on Friday.
Floyd also had a complete game in the playoffs, shutting out Summit 1-0 in Game 3 after catching all seven innings of Game 2 in an all afternoon doubleheader.
Cleburne faces defending state champ Wichita Falls Rider in the regional semifinals. Rider swept Canyon Randall in Abilene over the weekend.
