FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — Investigators say a man saved his 5-year-old daughter but he drowned as both were thrown from a horse in a lake at Fort Hood.
Military emergency personnel helped respond to the accident at Nolan Lake, which is on the sprawling Central Texas post.
Officials say Albert Gonzalez and his daughter were in a shallow area, about 10 feet from shore, when the horse encountered a drop-off into deeper water.
Authorities say Gonzalez managed to push his daughter to safety, but he was unable to reach shore. His body was recovered Sunday night.
A Fort Hood spokesman said Tuesday that the horse survived the accident.
