The Stephenville Optimist Club received regional recognition for continued support of Stephenville Parks and Recreation Department at the Tuesday meeting of the Stephenville City Council.

Optimist President Glenn Newberry accepted the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Region 4 Contributors Award from Drew Wells, director of community services for the city.

Wells said Stephenville is among 31 cities that make up TAAF Region 4 and each of the cities are allowed to submit their nominations prior to the selection of a single regional winner. Parks Superintendent Brenda Haggard nominated the club for the honor, he added.

The award is presented to individuals, organizations or businesses who have "contributed significantly" to the region through donations of time and energy or long-time financial support or sponsorship of athletic activities for a minimum of three years.

Wells said the hundreds of thousands of dollars donated by Optimists to the city over the last 30 or more years allows citizens to enjoy the highest quality athletic and recreational programs.

The club was one of 16 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation regional award winners who will contend for state recognition in September.

In an effort to make ongoing contributions possible, the 40th Annual Stephenville Optimist Club Auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Wisdom Gym. All of proceeds from the auction are remain in the community and are used to support local youth through donations to SPARD and other organizations.
